Which route for your next roaming?
It’s good, the desire to escape is there! And perhaps you already have a route, a GR or a region to explore in mind.
If this is not yet the case, we invite you to consult our some roaming ideas.
Otherwise, it is now time to get into the details of the project. And to start, you need to set your very personal goal of km/D+ per day, and over how many days.
The tools you need to know to chart your journey
Once you have your goal in mind, it's now a matter of charting your course. To do this, you will be able to rely on 3 tools:
- Trail trace to identify routes of interest that you could cut into several pieces
- Strava (paid version) to adapt your track, integrating your accommodation constraints (very practical for quickly simulating your route)
- Booking or AirBnB to find your accommodation between each evening. We recommend using their map to search for available accommodation on your route.
Know the weather forecast well
This is a very important aspect of your stay and you should not make too many mistakes when leaving.
We highly recommend the Météo Blue site and their multimodel tool which allows you to have a representative view of the potential weather phenomena that you may encounter.
If you are roaming in the mountains and the weather forecast is complicated, a good practice may be to call the shelters to get an overview of the situation.
This is what we did during our roaming in the Pyrenees when the weather forecast predicted snow.
THE ULTIMATE LIST OF EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR YOUR ROAM
We could all travel running! But this requires a little preparation and suitable equipment.
After some roaming and nomadic trails, we have created especially for you the ultimate list of all the equipment you need for a successful roaming, whether for 2 days or 1 full week, provided you can sleep every evening in a gite (shelter or hotel providing a meal, a bed and a sink).
The sink makes all the difference because our clothes dry very quickly, there is no need to pack several outfits. All you have to do is rinse your outfit for the day and dry it on a chair (your shorts will be dry in 5 hours) or on a radiator (dry in less than 1 hour).
Furthermore, the nutrition that would have to be taken on board for several days of roaming very quickly counts significantly in the weight and volume of the bag. From our perspective, a hybrid refueling (mix of technical nutrition and food found along the way) is ideal, because it makes the bag significantly lighter.
The basic equipment on you
- 1 Sherpa Short (Race or Max) or an Ultra Short
- 1 Ultra Shirt
- 1 Packable cap
- 1 pair of socks
In case of epic conditions (cold, snow, rain):
- Sherpa leggings instead of shorts
- Long Sleeve 220 BPM instead of the Ultra Shirt
Within reach in the bag
- 1 Blackshell
- 1 Nanoshell
- 1 Neck warmer
- 1 Pair of glasses
Epic Conditions - Add:
- 1 Hat
- 1 pair of gloves
Protected in the bag (with a Dry Bag or a freezer bag)
This is generally the evening outfit, but can also be used depending on the needs of the day.
- 1 Long Sleeve 220 BPM
- 1 Short 220 BPM
- A 2nd pair of socks for the evening
Epic Conditions - add:
- 1 FKT Pant or 1 Second Souffle Legging (to be taken in addition to or instead of the 220BPM shorts)
- 1 compact down jacket
- choose a pair of warm socks for the evening (merino wool)
